The County of Los Angeles Probation Department has partnered with local and national universities and colleges to offer unpaid internships in the criminal justice field. The Probation Department was established in 1903 with the enactment of California’s first probation laws. As a criminal justice agency, the Department has expanded to become the largest probation department in the world. The Department’s jurisdiction covers the entire County of Los Angeles and provides an extensive range of services through the efforts of over 4000 employees deployed in more than 50 locations. The Department serves all the municipal and superior courts of the County supervising juveniles and adult probationers in concert with court adjudication. Over two-thirds of our employees are sworn peace officers engaged in some aspect of probation work such as Deputy Probation Officers, Investigators, Detention Service Officers, or Supervisors. The Department is headquartered in the City of Downey, but work locations include Field Area Offices, Juvenile Detention Service Halls and Juvenile Residential Treatment Camps throughout the county.
