As of May 1st, 2025, Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall opened in 1957 to ease overcrowding at Central Juvenile Hall. It expanded over the years, adding a girls’ division in 1963, an 80-bed facility in 1975, and court and administrative buildings in 1976. Major upgrades in 2004 included new housing, a mental health clinic, and security improvements. The facility closed in 2019 due to declining population and was reopened in 2023 to consolidate pre-disposition youth operations. After renovations, the Probation Department relocated youth from Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall to Los Padrinos on July 18, 2023.
Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall is a temporary holding facility rather than a long-term correctional center, ensuring that detained youth remain in custody only as necessary for public safety. During their stay, they have access to education, rehabilitation programs, and structured activities while being supervised by probation officers under county regulations. Upon detention, youth must appear before a judge who evaluates the severity of the offense, criminal history, community risk, and rehabilitation needs to determine if continued custody is required. The court may also consider alternative placements, such as probation or community programs. While the average stay ranges from 7 to 23 days, the duration varies based on individual legal proceedings.
Los Padrinos offers a variety of educational, therapeutic and vocational programming for the youth in care, including but not limited to:
- Education: High School and college courses, library time, vocational training
- Arts & Culture: Visual arts, music, performance, creative writing, arts for healing
- Family Empowerment: Mentorship, financial literacy, leadership training
- Mentoring: Credible Messengers, ender specific female
- Therapy: Cognitive Behavior Therapy, life skills, drug treatment
- Religious Services: Bible studies
- Physical Activities: Fitness and outdoor large muscle exercises
- Community Events: Holiday celebrations and graduations
Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall serves as a transitional facility for justice-involved youth as they navigate the court process. Their length of stay is determined by a presiding officer, but during their time at the facility, they receive comprehensive care, including education, therapy, vocational training, mentorship, and behavior management. Committed to rehabilitation and growth, Los Padrinos strives to equip youth with the skills and support needed for a successful transition through adolescence, reintegration into society, and a positive future.
