Team Finishes as Top Probation Department in Race

Downey, CA—The Los Angeles County Probation Baker to Vegas team ran through the night to place 5th in the mixed division of the highly competitive 34th annual Baker to Vegas/Challenge Cup Relay March 17-18 in the Mojave Desert. The 120-mile, 20-stage foot race from Baker, California to Las Vegas, Nevada is law enforcement’s most prestigious relay run, as thousands of runners from public safety agencies worldwide compete for ultimate bragging rights on the arduous course.

Out of 275 teams that competed in this year’s race across all divisions, L.A. County Probation finished 65th with a final time of 15 hours, 57 minutes and 35 seconds, improving its finish by 26 places and its time by over 40 minutes from last year’s race. This improvement from the previous year earned the team the coveted Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Mug. The team ran in memory of Stephen Napoli, a beloved 23-year veteran of L.A. County Probation who recently passed away.

The highlight of the race was when Deputy Probation Officer Antonio Mascorro overtook a runner from Riverside County Probation with less than two miles to go allowing L.A. County Probation to finish ahead of all other probation departments in the race. Topping both Riverside County Probation and perennial rival San Diego County Probation made L.A. Probation’s desert performance that much sweeter.
