Los Padrinos is Changing — for the Better

Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall is entering a new chapter. In April 2025, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Espinoza issued an order directing the Los Angeles County Probation Department to begin depopulating the facility—but not to close it entirely. Instead, the court’s mandate calls for reducing the number of youth housed at Los Padrinos to a level that allows the Department to meet state standards set by the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC), particularly around staffing, safety, and care.

The court approved the Department’s depopulation plan on May 16th, 2025, and the department will be moving forward with implementation.

This depopulation plan is part of a broader effort to strengthen the County’s juvenile operations and ensure facilities are safe, supportive, and rehabilitative. This site provides updates, resources, and answers to your questions about what’s happening, why it matters, and how we’re working to ensure a smooth and transparent process for youth, families, and staff. Together, we are reimagining the future of juvenile care—grounded in dignity, accountability, and opportunity.
