Chief Probation Officer Guillermo Viera Rosa

Chief Guillermo Viera Rosa brings a 29-year tenure in corrections and probation to his role as the Chief Probation Officer of Los Angeles County. His distinguished career reflects his unwavering dedication to public safety and justice reform.

In 2016, former Governor Jerry Brown recognized Mr. Viera Rosa’s expertise by appointing him as Director of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s (CDCR) Division of Adult Parole Operations. His exemplary leadership led to his reappointment by Governor Gavin Newsom in 2020, making him an ex-officio member of the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC).

April 2023 marked a pivotal moment in his career as he took on the role of Chief Strategist of Juvenile Operations for Los Angeles County.  This newly created position by the Board of Supervisors aimed to enhance and stabilize conditions within the Department’s juvenile division. Shortly thereafter, in May 2023, he transitioned to Interim Chief of the Los Angeles County Probation Department. During this period, he played a crucial role in restructuring juvenile operations, including the closure of Central and Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Halls and the renovation of Los Padrinos to meet state standards.

On October 3, 2023, Mr. Viera Rosa was formally sworn in as the Chief Probation Officer of Los Angeles County by the Board of Supervisors. This appointment underscores his professional accomplishments and the trust vested in his leadership capabilities.

Chief Viera Rosa’s career in probation began as a Reserve Deputy Probation Officer at the San Bernardino County Juvenile Hall while still a college student. This early exposure ignited his passion for the field and laid the foundation for a remarkable career. In 1995, he became a full-time probation officer, steadily advancing through 15 ranks in regional and state positions across Sacramento, the Central Valley, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles.

His expansive career also includes notable roles such as CDCR’s Director of Policy Research and Internal Oversight, Deputy Commissioner and Corrections Counselor for the Board of Parole Hearings, CDCR Undersecretary of Operations, Commissioner for Adult and Juvenile Interstate Compacts and in April of 2024, Chief Viera Rosa was sworn in as Lieutenant-Colonel for Sunburst Academy for Youth.

Chief Viera Rosa’s extensive experience and strategic vision continues to drive significant improvements within the Los Angeles County Probation Department, ensuring a safer and more effective corrections environment.
